Space and resources are scarce for poor families living in the urban outskirts of Siem Reap. At REACH, we’ve transformed an overgrown patch of land into a lifeline. Our organic Garden Program is more than a source of fresh food; it’s a living classroom where our community grows its way out of hunger.
Our Garden Program is a vital extension of our Health and Nutrition Program. Vegetables grown by our students go to families most in need and to the school kitchen, where they turn up on plates at breakfast and lunchtime.
Throughout the year, our garden keeps producing organic vegetables, including morning glory, spinach, chilli, eggplant and cucumbers. From this harvest, we distribute nutrition packs to students and families in need of an extra health boost.
An Outdoor Classroom
We believe that teaching a child to grow food is a skill that lasts a lifetime. The Garden Program is a core part of our curriculum. Green Room students and REACH Role Models start the year with garden sessions on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, and Purple Room students join the garden roster in Semester 2. It’s learning that goes beyond the classroom, giving students a place to explore, discover, and grow with their own two hands.
The upkeep of our garden is a team effort. Our kitchen team leads the way, supported by parent volunteers through our Outreach Program. Each week, they come to REACH to assist in the kitchen and garden. No single family carries the load alone.
While Cambodia’s seasons can be challenging, with heat and heavy rain both testing our garden, we adapt by growing resilient crops and even teaching our students to make their own organic pest spray. This flexibility ensures our Garden Program continues to flourish regardless of the weather.
