At REACH, we believe that education and emotional health go hand-in-hand. For a child growing up in poverty, the weight of trauma and instability makes it nearly impossible to focus on a textbook. If a child’s basic need for security isn’t met, they simply cannot learn. Our Wellbeing Program is designed to heal the whole child, building the emotional grit and resilience they need to thrive in school and beyond. This support extends to families too, with guidance available for parents and guardians whenever they need it.

Our approach is built on a proactive Behaviour Management Framework developed with psychological experts. Rather than reacting with punishment, we use positive reinforcement to help students navigate their feelings.

At its core is the principle of Positive Reinforcement. By focusing on rewarding and encouraging desired actions, we cultivate a culture of support and internal motivation. We teach our students to understand, process, and manage their own emotions and behaviours, replacing cycles of negative actions with self-awareness.

This system is built upon the three foundational school values:

Respect, Responsibility & Safety

The School Matrix & 4 Skies System: We use a common language across the school to define what our values look like in action. Every classroom features the “4 Skies” visual chart (Shining, Sunny, Stormy, Dark), helping students track their own behaviour and develop essential self-regulation skills in a non-judgmental way.

The Calm Room: Recognising that our students often carry the weight of outside trauma, our dedicated Calm Room provides a safe refuge. Overseen by our trained Wellbeing Officer, it is a space for students to de-escalate, process overwhelming emotions, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

The Star Ticket System: We love to celebrate progress. This tangible reward system recognises students who demonstrate positive behaviour or marked improvement. Weekly lucky draws and monthly class collections foster a peer culture of encouragement and collective responsibility.

Counselling & Referrals: Our team provides ongoing counselling support for students, parents, and guardians facing personal or emotional challenges, with timely referrals to the Wellbeing Room when extra support is needed.

Comprehensive Staff Training: Wellbeing isn’t just one person’s job. Every teacher, assistant, and admin member receives ongoing training in our framework, ensuring our students are surrounded by consistent, supportive adults in a child’s wellbeing journey.

Since early 2025, our Wellbeing Program has been instrumental in keeping our community resilient. Our Wellbeing Officer has worked closely with students to navigate the pressures of adolescence and the complexities of poverty. Alongside this individual support, we also transitioned to interactive, projector-based training for our lessons, which has significantly improved how students connect with and understand their emotional health.

Even when things get tough, like managing rowdy classrooms or keeping our spirits up when the monsoon rains make our learning spaces noisy and wet, our team remains steadfast. By investing in better tech and deeper staff training, we are helping our students turn their “Stormy” days into “Shining” ones. We aren’t just managing behaviour; we are helping these kids find the internal strength that poverty tries to take away.
