I am Phanin Heng. I was born and brought up in Trang Village, Sla Kram District, Siem Reap City, Cambodia. I grew up with only one brother. My hobbies vary according to seasons, reflecting my multifaceted personality. I enjoy a variety of hobbies from writing, music, crocheting, and art. However, reading has always been my number one activity because it is an escape to another world or another person’s imagination.
Growing up in a province full of history and culture has exposed me to the importance of English as a second language. It is almost everyone’s gateway to seeking a brighter future. Since Cambodia has a long history of war and has only recently taken a step towards a break from wars, most families are still struggling to make ends meet. Hence, many foreigners came to Cambodia to collaborate with locals to create and establish NGOs to support the living conditions here. To minimize our living expenses, my parents decided to send me to an NGO school called English for Children Dream. Through their support, I have learned valuable English communication and computer literacy. It built me a well-constructed foundation for new opportunities such as enrolling in the ACE diploma directly and receiving scholarships from Paragon International University.
Due to health concerns, I made a harsh decision to come to Siem Reap to continue my education. I majored in international relations at Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia, Siem Reap, hoping to work in any NGO. However, finding a job in an NGO is difficult, or it was nearly impossible when I was looking for one. As unpredictable as I am, I decided to temporarily work as a barista at Onederz Hostel. However, it has taught me the most valuable experience of my life that people who serve food and beverages should be respected more.
I have always held deep gratitude towards NGOs that work to alleviate poverty and offer multiple programs in Cambodia. One day, I found out that REACH NGO was looking for a program sponsorship officer hoping to give back to the community. I am committed to working under this NGO to give back the same opportunities I once received when I was a child, if not greater. I am looking forward to contributing to our team as well as the children of Cambodia.
