REACH Riders Manager

Rin Borith

My name is Borith. I am 25 years old, and I was born in a small village in Battambang province. I grew up with 2 brothers and a sister. When I was about 10 years old and studying in grade 4, I started to learn English. As my family was living below the poverty line, in my spare time I would collect recycled rubbish to enable me to pay the small fees associated with studying at the public school.

Because my parents were survivors of the war, they were not able to get much formal education, but they understood how important education was, and so they always encouraged me to get a good education.

After 12 years at school with support from my family, I could see the bigger world. However, when you are living in poverty, going to university is not as easy as expected. So, I tried to work hard and apply for as many scholarships as I could. Fortunately, I was successful, and I had the chance to study at university for 4 years. During university, I was working at the same time. This led me to become a cycling tour guide, which I loved so much, as I had the chance to meet a lot of people from all over the world and practice my English. Realising my passion for meeting new people and sharing my knowledge with them on Cambodia and cycling, I wanted to continue to build myself up with different skills to be better as a guide. This is why I moved to live in Siem Reap because of the higher tourism numbers and now, Siem Reap is my home.

I had been working as a tour guide from 2013 until 2020 when the global pandemic swept across the world and affected tourism. Unfortunately, after years of hard work, I lost my job, but something more exciting happened. I have always been willing to learn something new, which brought me to this job at REACH Siem Reap as a tour guide and bike mechanic with the REACH Riders Club.

REACH has provided me this opportunity to work with the local community and the amazing youths here who have access to all of REACH’s programs. The youths are all so helpful and eager to learn and I really enjoy teaching them new skills. I am also so happy to be working with the team here, as everyone is so creative, motivated, and excited to make positive change.
