$425.00raised of $10,000.00 goal
In January 2021 we have set ourselves the goal of cycling 650 kilometres each in Cambodia to help support impoverished youth at REACH Siem Reap. Prior to this we aim to collectively raise a total of $10,000 Aus. This total will be used directly to support young people to acquire what we would consider the ‘basics’ of life – an education and food, at a critical juncture in their lives.
“I, Mike was fortunate enough to experience first-hand the beauty of the land and people in January 2014. What I also experienced was the dire poverty and living circumstances of numbers of the people post – genocide. After 40 years the effects of having 25% of the population killed still bears heavily upon the young. I was able to offer support then, and have continued this relationship with Cambodia and its people since. Many live off less than $1.25 a day, and some families are reduced to living and collecting plastic and other ‘reusables’ off the local tip to survive. There is nothing left aside for basic human needs such as healthcare or education.”
“I, Ali, participated in a charity bike ride through Northern Thailand five years ago which is an experience that will stay with me forever. It was an opportunity to see first hand the difference that education, health and nutrition offer. The greeting we received at the conclusion of the ride from the children who were being cared for was heartwarming.
Five years on it’s time to get back into training this time to raise funds for Reach Siem Reap, a charity that also helps children who would otherwise not have access to the education they need in order to break the poverty cycle that exists in Cambodia.
In addition to education Reach will offer a nutrition program to provide a variety of free, nutritious meals twice daily and access to clean drinking water because malnutrition impacts on the physical and cognitive development of children and, after all, who can study properly when they’re hungry?
Both Mike and I are looking forward to not only the bike ride but an ongoing relationship with Reach and the children it will benefit. In particular I’m excited about cycling into the school at the end of the ride to be greeted by the students and their families and being able to see again the difference that we can make to these children.
This is why we are asking you to consider donating to our fundraiser for REACH.
REACH has a number of encompassing programs that offer support to young people at this critical point in their lives. It is a registered NGO in Cambodia and is starting to build more classrooms to offer a free education to those who need it most, offering a way out of the cycle of poverty and unemployment.
We are funding our own airfares and tour costs. All the money will go directly to families who most need it.
No amount is too small. Thank you so much.
